Shopify Agency
Shopify Development Services From a Shopify Plus Partner
We design, build, migrate and grow Shopify stores for brands that sell more than a simple catalog: custom products, wholesale pricing, back-office systems and real revenue targets.

The short answer
Shopify development services cover everything it takes to build, run and grow a store on Shopify: theme design, custom apps, migrations, Shopify Plus builds, integrations and SEO. Front Row is a Shopify Plus Partner that has worked on more than 20 client stores, from first build to ongoing optimization.
What does a Shopify agency do?
A Shopify agency is a team that plans, builds and improves online stores on the Shopify platform. Shopify development services are the work itself: custom themes, apps, checkout logic, data migration, integrations and the search and marketing work that brings buyers to the store. Front Row delivers all of it under our Shopify services, so one team owns the store from the first sketch to the monthly report.
We are a Shopify Plus Partner and a Searchspring New Partner of the Year for 2023. We have worked on more than 20 client stores, including public cases such as My Custom Golf Ball, Mountain High Outfitters and a playground equipment brand. Many of those brands sell products that do not fit a standard template: customized goods, big-ticket items, wholesale accounts and catalogs that sync with an ERP.
Front Row has been in business since 1973 and sells for manufacturers in retail every day. That is why we build stores around how products actually sell, how orders reach the warehouse and what the finance team needs to see. This page walks through each service, what it costs, how to hire a Shopify developer and how we measure the result.

Who Our Shopify Agency Is For
- Brands moving off Magento or another platform that has become hard to run.
- Stores selling customized, made-to-order or high-ticket products that need more than a template.
- Growing brands that are ready for Shopify Plus and need it set up properly.
- Manufacturers adding direct-to-consumer or wholesale sales next to a retail business.
- Teams whose store works but is slow, outdated or disconnected from inventory and finance, and who want one partner to fix all three.
Partner Credentials
A Shopify Plus Partner That Has Run These Stores
Credentials matter less than what a team has shipped, so we start with the work. We have built and supported more than 20 client stores, and we keep supporting many of them years after launch.
That history is also why Shopify Plus projects go smoothly with us. We know where Plus pays for itself and where a standard plan is enough, and we will tell you which.
- Shopify Plus Partner, Klaviyo Partner and Google Partner.
- Searchspring New Partner of the Year, 2023.
- One team for build, apps, email, ads and SEO, so nothing falls between vendors.
Design & Themes
Storefronts Built Around How Your Customers Buy
A good theme is not a coat of paint. It sets the tone of the brand and decides how fast the page loads, how clearly a shopper sees the right option and whether a buyer trusts the checkout.
Our Shopify theme development starts from your catalog and your buyers. We build in Liquid, often on Dawn, and write the theme so your team can edit it without calling a developer.
- Custom themes for My Custom Golf Ball, a playground equipment brand and other client stores.
- Product pages for configurable, made-to-order and high-ticket items.
- Editor-friendly sections so marketing can launch pages alone.
Custom Apps
Apps and Checkout Logic Your Store Cannot Buy Off the Shelf
When an app store listing almost fits, we build the part that does. Our Shopify app development work is the reason several clients can sell things competitors cannot.
For My Custom Golf Ball we built a product customizer where shoppers place text, logos and artwork and the store produces production files. We also build discount rules, shipping logic and checkout functions.
- Our product customizer with per-element pricing and production-ready files.
- A custom discount type that takes a percentage off with a cap, targeted by collection.
- Percentage-based shipping for a playground equipment brand, where products range from about $200 to over $31,000.
- Cart price breaks and estimated delivery dates built with Shopify Functions.
Migration
Migrations That Keep Your Search Traffic
Replatforming is risky because search engines remember your old URLs. A Shopify migration done well moves the data, the redirects and the rankings together.
Mountain High Outfitters moved from Magento to Shopify with customers and orders intact and search value preserved. Afterward the store saw +52% orders, +4.5% cart conversion and +25% top-line revenue.
Back Office & Growth
Connected to Your Systems and Built to Grow
Orders, inventory and customer data should not live in spreadsheets. We connect Shopify to ERP and warehouse systems, including NetSuite and Shopify integration, so stock levels and orders match what the finance team sees.
After launch, our ecommerce marketing and Shopify SEO teams keep traffic and conversion moving. Everything is reported monthly against goals set before the build starts.
What do Shopify development services include?
Shopify development services include every technical and design task needed to launch, change or scale a store on Shopify. The scope ranges from fixing one template to rebuilding a business on Shopify Plus.
The six service areas
- Theme and storefront development: the design and Liquid code customers see.
- Shopify Plus implementation: checkout, B2B, multi-store and automation features on Shopify's top tier.
- Migration: moving products, customers, orders and redirects from another platform.
- Custom apps: private or embedded apps and Shopify Functions for logic the platform lacks.
- Integrations: connections to ERP, warehouse, shipping, email and analytics systems.
- Optimization and support: speed, SEO, conversion testing and ongoing fixes.
Most projects touch more than one area. A migration usually needs a theme, redirects and an integration. We scope the whole job up front so the pieces fit together instead of arriving as separate invoices. You get one plan, one timeline and one team answering for the result.
How does a Shopify engagement run from start to finish?
A Shopify engagement with Front Row runs in five stages: discover, plan, build, launch and grow. Each stage ends with a deliverable you can review before we move on.
- Discover We audit your current store, catalog, data and systems, and agree on the goals the project must hit.
- Plan We write the scope, page map, integration list, redirect plan and a fixed timeline with named milestones.
- Build We develop the theme, apps and integrations on a development store and review each milestone with you.
- Launch We test orders, checkout, tracking and redirects, then switch over at a time that protects your sales.
- Grow We monitor the store, fix issues and run SEO, email and ad work against the goals from step one.
The launch window gets the most care. We test with real products, real discount codes and real payment methods before any customer sees the new store.
How much do Shopify development services cost?
Shopify development costs range from a few hundred dollars for a small fix to six figures for a complex Plus or headless build, and scope is the main driver. Our own projects typically start at about $5,000.
The ranges below are typical market figures from public agency pricing guides, not Front Row quotes. We quote each project case by case after discovery.
| Project type | Typical market range | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Small fixes and template edits | $500 to $5,000 | Number of pages, apps involved, testing |
| New store on a standard Shopify plan | $5,000 to $30,000 | Custom theme or not, catalog size, apps |
| Magento or other platform migration | $10,000 to $50,000+ | Data volume, redirects, custom features |
| Shopify Plus build | $30,000 to $150,000 | Checkout work, B2B, integrations, multi-store |
| Custom app or Shopify Function | $5,000 to $50,000+ | Logic complexity, admin screens, maintenance |
| Ongoing support retainer | Monthly, scoped to hours | Hours of development, SEO and testing |
What drives the number
- How much of the design is custom compared with an adapted theme.
- How many products, variants and customers must move or sync.
- Whether the store connects to an ERP or warehouse system.
- How many custom features the template cannot do.
- The quality of the content and photography you already have.
How long does a Shopify development project take?
Most Shopify projects take between 4 and 16 weeks or more, depending on how much changes. We set the real date after discovery.
| Project | Typical timeline |
|---|---|
| Focused storefront redesign | 4 to 8 weeks |
| Full migration to Shopify | 8 to 12 weeks |
| ERP integration, custom app or omnichannel work | 12 to 16+ weeks |
Delays rarely come from code. They come from late content, unclear approvals, slow decisions on design and data that needs cleaning. We ask for those items early and put them on the milestone plan.
How do you hire Shopify experts or a Shopify developer?
To hire a Shopify developer, define the outcome you need, shortlist people or agencies who have shipped similar stores, check real work, and compare scoped quotes rather than hourly rates alone.
- Write the brief List your goal, catalog size, systems to connect, deadline and budget range. A one-page brief gets better quotes and shows you which developers read it closely.
- Shortlist by similar work Look for stores like yours: same product type, same complexity, same integrations.
- Check proof Ask for live store links, named references and results with dates. Confirm the partner status they claim.
- Test how they think In the first call, a good developer asks about your customers and data before proposing a solution.
- Compare scopes Put quotes side by side on deliverables, testing, handover and support, not only the total.
Questions to ask any Shopify developer
- Which live stores have you built that resemble ours?
- Who writes the code, and who manages the project day to day?
- How do you test checkout, discounts and redirects before launch?
- What do I own at the end, and how is the code documented?
- What happens when something breaks six months after launch?
If you want a team instead of one person, our Minneapolis Shopify agency works with local and national brands alike.
Freelancer, agency or in-house: who should build your Shopify store?
Hire a freelancer for small, well-defined tasks, an agency for builds that touch many systems, and an in-house developer when you have steady work every week.
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | Fixes, small features, short projects | One person, limited cover for holidays or illness |
| Agency | Builds, migrations, Plus, integrations, growth work | Higher rates, so check who actually does the work |
| In-house developer | Constant roadmap and daily changes | Salary, management time and a narrow range of skills |
Many brands combine them: an agency for the build and a retainer for monthly changes. The point is that someone besides the original author can pick up the code, so insist on documentation either way.
What mistakes should you avoid on a Shopify project?
The most common Shopify mistake is starting design before the goals, data and systems are mapped. The other mistakes follow from that.
- Skipping redirects. Old URLs that return errors can wipe out search traffic for months.
- Stacking apps. Each app adds code and cost. Build the rare feature, and keep the app list short.
- Ignoring mobile speed. Most shoppers arrive on phones, and slow pages lose them.
- Treating launch as the finish. Stores need fixes, tests and updates.
- Choosing on hourly rate alone. A cheaper rate with a longer schedule often costs more.
- Leaving tracking until later. Without clean analytics you cannot tell what worked.
We catch these in discovery, and each one has a fix. Redirect maps are built from your real URL list. App reviews check what each app costs and what it loads. Speed is measured on a phone before sign-off. Tracking is tested with a real order. For search risk in particular, a redirect and ranking checklist runs before and after every launch.
How do you measure the results of Shopify development?
Measure Shopify development by the business numbers the store exists to move: orders, conversion rate, revenue and the cost of getting them. We agree on these before the build starts.
- Orders and revenue compared with the same period before launch.
- Cart and checkout conversion rate.
- Page speed on mobile for the top landing pages.
- Organic search traffic and rankings for core terms.
- Operational measures such as order errors and manual hours saved.
Mountain High Outfitters is a good example. After its migration the store posted +52% orders, +4.5% cart conversion and +25% top-line revenue. My Custom Golf Ball, a full-suite client, saw +216% Amazon store traffic and +52% Amazon revenue alongside its Shopify work. Results depend on the starting point, so we report against your own baseline, not industry averages. Every month you see the same dashboard, with notes on what changed and what we will do next.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Shopify development services?
Shopify development services are the design, coding, migration, integration and support work needed to build and run a store on Shopify. They include themes, custom apps, checkout logic, Shopify Plus builds and the SEO and marketing work after launch.
What does a Shopify agency do that a freelancer does not?
An agency brings a team: a developer, a designer, a project manager and testers, with someone to cover if a person is out. That matters for migrations, Plus builds and integrations. For small tasks, a good freelancer is often the better value.
Is Front Row a Shopify Plus Partner?
Yes. Front Row is a Shopify Plus Partner, a Klaviyo Partner and a Google Partner, and we were named Searchspring New Partner of the Year for 2023. We have worked on more than 20 client stores.
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify expert or developer?
Market rates range from about $25 an hour offshore to over $200 an hour for senior agency staff, and projects run from a few hundred dollars to six figures. We quote each project case by case after discovery, and our projects typically start at about $5,000.
Do you build custom Shopify apps?
Yes. We built a product customizer, plus discount rules, percentage-based shipping, cart price breaks and checkout functions. We build when an existing app cannot do the job and keep the app count low.
Can you migrate our store from Magento to Shopify?
Yes. We move products, customers and orders, plan 301 redirects and test before launch. Mountain High Outfitters moved from Magento to Shopify and saw +52% orders, +4.5% cart conversion and +25% top-line revenue.
Should we choose Shopify Plus or a standard Shopify plan?
Choose Plus when you need checkout customization, B2B and wholesale features, multiple stores or high-volume automation. A standard plan fits many stores. We compare both against your needs and give an honest recommendation, including when Plus is not worth the cost.
Can you connect Shopify to our ERP?
Yes. We have connected Shopify with NetSuite through its API for orders and inventory and built Shopify order and inventory syncs for clients. Tell us your ERP and we will confirm the approach during discovery.
How long does a Shopify project take?
A focused redesign takes 4 to 8 weeks, a full migration 8 to 12 weeks, and ERP, custom app or omnichannel work 12 to 16 weeks or more. We confirm dates after discovery.
Do you offer support after launch?
Yes. We support stores after launch, with fixes, testing, speed, SEO, email and ads scoped to what you need. Many of our client stores stay with us for years after launch.
Do you work with brands outside Minnesota?
Yes. Our office is in Edina, Minnesota, and we work with brands across the country. Everything runs remotely with video check-ins and shared project boards.
