Shopify SEO
Shopify SEO Services Built Around Your Catalog
We fix what Shopify's defaults get wrong, write collection and product pages that rank, protect your rankings through migrations, and report on revenue, not just rankings.

The short answer
Shopify SEO services are the technical, content and measurement work that helps a Shopify store rank for the searches that sell its products. Front Row, a Shopify Plus Partner, fixes duplicate URLs, canonicals, faceted navigation, speed, structured data and international setup. We then write collection and product pages and protect rankings during migrations.
What do Shopify SEO services include?
Shopify SEO services cover three jobs. First, technical work that makes the store easy for search engines to crawl and understand. Second, content on the pages that earn revenue: collections, products and guides. Third, measurement that ties organic traffic to orders. A good engagement does all three in order, because content on a broken foundation wastes money.
Shopify handles a lot for you, which is why generic SEO advice misses so much. The platform sets canonical tags, builds a sitemap and fixes your URL prefixes. It also creates duplicate product paths, tag pages and filter URLs that need a decision. Our first job is finding which of those defaults help you and which quietly cost you traffic.
We work with manufacturers, brands and retailers selling online, from a few hundred products to very large catalogs. Because we also build themes, run migrations and manage paid media, we can change theme code ourselves instead of writing a ticket for someone else.

Who Our Shopify SEO Services Are For
- Shopify and Shopify Plus stores with traffic that has plateaued or dropped.
- Brands about to move to Shopify from Magento, WooCommerce or another platform.
- Manufacturers launching direct-to-consumer stores next to a retail channel.
- Stores with large catalogs, many variants or heavy filtering.
- Teams that want an agency able to change theme code, not only send recommendations.
The Platform
Why Shopify Needs Its Own SEO Playbook
Shopify makes the easy parts of SEO easy. Every store gets a sitemap, SSL, a canonical tag on each page and clean, editable titles and meta descriptions. That is why the problems that remain look unfamiliar to people who learned SEO on WordPress or Magento.
The platform also fixes parts of your structure. Products must live under /products/, collections under /collections/, and you cannot remove those prefixes. Tag filters, sorting and variant parameters create extra URLs on top. These are not bugs. They are constraints, and good Shopify SEO works inside them.
- Fixed URL prefixes mean internal linking and canonicals matter more.
- Themes and apps control most of your on-page code, so quality varies by store.
Technical
Technical SEO for Shopify: What We Fix First
Technical SEO for Shopify is mostly about controlling which URLs search engines see and how fast they load.
- Duplicate product URLs: a product can load at /products/name and at /collections/x/products/name. The canonical should point to the first, but collection grids that link to the longer path still split internal links.
- Faceted navigation: filters and sort options create parameter URLs. We decide which combinations deserve an indexable page and block or canonicalize the rest.
- Theme speed: oversized images, render-blocking scripts and leftover app code drag down Largest Contentful Paint and Interaction to Next Paint.
- Structured data: themes and apps often output overlapping Product markup. We keep one clean source with accurate price, availability and review data.
- Markets and hreflang: international stores need consistent language and region signals, or the wrong version ranks in the wrong country.
Content
Collection and Product Pages That Rank
Collection pages usually carry the best commercial keywords, and most stores leave them empty. A grid of thumbnails gives a search engine almost nothing to read. We add a short, useful introduction, clear subcategory links and buying guidance that helps a shopper decide.
Product pages need different work. Manufacturer descriptions copied across dozens of retailers will not rank. We rewrite titles, descriptions and specifications for the buyer's questions: fit, materials, compatibility, delivery and returns.
We have seen what focused SEO does for a product line: a smart thermostat manufacturer gained 33% more retailer restocking orders from a 25-keyword campaign, and its products went from 2 to 8 of the first 10 organic results.
- One primary keyword per collection, supported by related terms used naturally.
- Unique product copy for the products that matter most to revenue first.
- Internal links between related products, collections and guides.
Migration
Migration SEO: Keep What You Have Earned
A platform move is the most dangerous moment for organic traffic. Every URL that changes without a redirect is a ranking you may lose. We map the old store's URLs to the new ones before design is finished, not the week before launch.
We did this for Mountain High Outfitters, a large retailer moving from Magento to Shopify. We migrated customers, orders and back-end systems while maintaining the SEO value of the old website. The result was +52% orders, +4.5% cart conversion and +25% top-line revenue.
Measurement
How We Measure Shopify SEO
We report on outcomes you can bank: organic sessions to the pages that sell, orders and revenue from organic search, and the share of your catalog indexed and ranking. Rankings alone tell you little.
Our own tooling helps here. We run an internal content platform that analyzes keywords and drafts copy and meta tags for an editor to review, and we use a tool for linking related products on Shopify. People still decide what ships.
- Google Search Console for impressions, clicks, index coverage and canonical conflicts.
- GA4 and Shopify reports for organic orders and revenue.
- Rank tracking for a short list of commercial terms, not hundreds of vanity keywords.
What are Shopify SEO services and what should they include?
Shopify SEO services are paid work that improves how a Shopify store appears in search results, covering technical fixes, content and reporting. A complete service has three parts, and a provider that sells only one of them is selling you a fraction of the result.
The three parts
- Technical: crawl, indexing, URL structure, canonicals, speed and structured data.
- Content: collection pages, product pages, guides and internal links.
- Measurement: Search Console, GA4 and Shopify data tied to organic revenue.
Be wary of any proposal that is only keywords and monthly blog posts. Blog posts rarely fix a store with thin collections and confusing duplicate URLs.
This is one part of our broader SEO services.
How to improve SEO on Shopify: our audit and fix process
You improve SEO on Shopify by fixing technical blockers first, then improving the pages that earn revenue, then measuring and repeating. This is the sequence we follow on every store.
- Crawl and baseline We crawl the store, pull Search Console and GA4 data, and record organic traffic, revenue and indexed pages so every later change has a before.
- Audit the platform issues We check duplicate product paths, canonicals, tag and filter URLs, pagination, redirects, sitemap, robots rules, structured data and Core Web Vitals.
- Prioritize by revenue We rank fixes by the revenue they protect or unlock and by effort. A canonical error on your top collection beats a missing alt tag on page 400.
- Fix the theme and templates We make code changes in Liquid and review them in a staging theme before they go live on your store.
- Improve collections and products We rewrite the pages closest to revenue, add internal links and publish buying guides that answer the questions shoppers ask before purchase.
- Measure and repeat We report monthly on organic revenue, indexed pages and ranking movement, then choose the next set of fixes from the data.
If your theme is slow or hard to edit, the best fix may be a rebuild. Our Shopify theme development team handles that.
How do you fix duplicate URLs, canonicals and faceted navigation on Shopify?
You fix them by deciding which URL should rank for each page, then making your theme, canonicals, internal links and robots rules all point to that one URL. Shopify does part of this for you, but not all of it.
Duplicate product URLs
Shopify adds canonical tags automatically. On a collection path, the tag should point to the main /products/ URL. That tag is a hint, not a command. If every collection grid links to the long path, you split internal links across two addresses. We change the theme so collection grids link straight to the canonical URL.
Collection tags, filters and sorting
Tag pages, filter parameters and sort options can create thousands of near-identical URLs. Most should not be indexed. A few, such as a filtered view for a popular size or material, deserve their own indexable page with unique content.
| URL pattern | Risk | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| /collections/x/products/y | Splits internal links with /products/y | Link grids to /products/y; keep the canonical |
| ?variant= parameters | Duplicate product views | Canonical to the main product URL |
| /collections/x/tag-name | Thin or duplicate listings | Noindex or canonicalize, unless the tag earns demand |
| Filter and sort parameters | Crawl waste and duplicates | Canonical to the base collection; block unneeded combinations |
| ?page=2 and beyond | Thin pages and orphaned products | Self-canonical, keep crawlable, link deep products elsewhere |
How do theme speed, structured data and Markets affect Shopify SEO?
They affect it in three ways: speed shapes the experience and crawl efficiency, structured data helps search engines read your products, and Markets settings decide which version appears in which country.
Theme speed
Most slow Shopify stores are slowed by what was added later: apps, tracking scripts, sliders and uncompressed images. We measure real-user Core Web Vitals in Search Console, then remove or defer what does not earn its weight. Often the biggest win is deleting an unused app.
Structured data
Structured data is code that labels the facts on a page, such as a product's price, availability and rating. Themes, review apps and SEO apps often each output their own Product markup. Conflicting versions can cause errors or lost rich results. We keep one source and validate it.
Markets and hreflang
Shopify Markets lets one store sell in several countries and languages. Shopify adds hreflang tags automatically for markets with their own domain, subdomain or subfolder. We check that each market has a consistent URL structure, that translations are real rather than machine-pasted, and that currency changes do not create duplicate pages.
How do you write collection and product pages that rank on Shopify?
You write them for the shopper's question first and the keyword second. A collection page should help someone choose between the products in it, and a product page should remove the last doubt before they buy.
Collection pages
- A short opening that names what the collection is and who it suits.
- Links to subcollections and the most useful related guides.
- A buying guide below the grid covering sizing, materials, use cases or compatibility.
Product pages
Start with products that already get impressions in Search Console but few clicks. Rewrite the title tag, the first paragraph and the specification block. Add the details a manufacturer sheet leaves out, like how it compares to the alternative, what it fits and how it ships.
Large catalogs need a system. Our internal content platform drafts copy and meta tags for an editor to review, and neither tool replaces someone who knows the product.
How do you keep your SEO when you migrate to Shopify?
You keep it by mapping every old URL that has traffic, links or rankings to its closest new equivalent with a 301 redirect, and by checking the result after launch. Skipping this step is the most common way stores lose organic traffic.
What we do before launch
- Export every URL from the old store, plus Search Console and analytics data to see which ones matter.
- Map each URL to a new Shopify URL, accepting that Shopify's fixed prefixes will change many paths.
- Carry over titles, meta descriptions, headings and content that already perform.
- Test redirects in bulk on staging, and import them to Shopify at launch.
What we do after launch
We watch Search Console for 404s, crawl errors and index drops daily in the first weeks, fix redirect gaps and compare organic landing pages to the baseline. Traffic often dips briefly after any migration, so we track recovery against a plan.
A named example
For Mountain High Outfitters, we migrated customers, orders and back-end systems from Magento to Shopify while maintaining the SEO value of the old website. The wider project is covered by our Shopify migration service.
How much do Shopify SEO services cost?
Shopify SEO services typically cost from about $1,500 to $10,000 a month for ongoing work, and a one-time audit usually runs from roughly $2,000 to $8,000. These are market ranges, not a Front Row quote. Your catalog size and competition move the number most.
| Service | Typical range | What drives the price |
|---|---|---|
| One-time technical audit | $2,000 to $8,000 | Catalog size, markets, number of apps, depth of reporting |
| Monthly SEO retainer | $1,500 to $10,000 per month | Content volume, competition, technical backlog, link work |
| Collection and product content project | Priced per page or per batch | Number of pages, research depth, review cycles |
| Migration SEO | Usually part of the migration project | URL count, redirect complexity, platform being replaced |
| Freelance consultant | Often lower hourly or monthly fees | Limited capacity and narrower skill coverage |
We scope after an audit, so you pay for the work your store needs. Billing is hybrid and quoted case by case, with no minimum commitment. SEO compounds over six months or more.
How do you choose Shopify SEO experts or an agency?
Choose the one that can show you Shopify-specific fixes, named results and who does the work. A good Shopify SEO agency, consultant or expert will talk about your theme and catalog in the first call, not about generic best practices.
Questions to ask
- Can you edit Liquid templates, or do you hand us a document?
- How do you handle collection grids that link to non-canonical product URLs?
- What happened to organic traffic on your last Shopify migration?
- How will you report on organic revenue, not just rankings?
- Who does the work, and who will I talk to each month?
Mistakes to avoid
- Installing several SEO apps that overwrite each other's markup.
- Blocking URLs in robots.txt when a noindex was needed.
- Launching a new theme without a redirect and metadata plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are Shopify SEO services?
Shopify SEO services are technical, content and reporting work that helps a Shopify store rank in search. They include audits, canonical and URL fixes, theme speed, structured data, collection and product page content, migration SEO and monthly reporting on organic revenue.
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes, with caveats. Shopify gives you a sitemap, SSL, canonical tags and editable meta data. It also fixes URL prefixes and creates duplicate paths and filter URLs that need management. Most stores rank well once those issues are handled.
How long do Shopify SEO results take?
Technical fixes can show in Search Console within weeks, but revenue gains from content and rankings usually take three to six months. Competitive categories take longer. We set expectations after the audit, because the timeline depends on your starting point and competitors.
What does a Shopify SEO audit include?
A crawl and indexing review, duplicate URL and canonical findings, faceted navigation rules, redirect and sitemap checks, structured data validation, Core Web Vitals, and a content review of top collections and products. You get a prioritized fix list ranked by revenue impact and effort.
Do you work on Shopify Plus stores?
Yes. Front Row is a Shopify Plus Partner. Plus stores often add checkout customizations, multiple storefronts and Markets, which create additional SEO considerations. We handle those alongside standard collection, product and technical work.
Can you change our theme code, or only make recommendations?
We change the code. Our team builds and maintains Shopify themes, so we make SEO fixes in Liquid ourselves and test them on a staging theme first. You can also have us hand specifications to your own developer if you prefer.
Will I lose rankings if I migrate to Shopify?
Not if the migration is planned for SEO. Map every important old URL to a new one with a 301 redirect, keep strong titles and content, and monitor Search Console after launch. A short dip is common. We track recovery against the pre-launch baseline.
Do you handle international SEO with Shopify Markets?
Yes. We review your market structure, hreflang output, translation quality and currency handling, so the right version shows in each country. We also advise on subfolders versus country domains before you commit, because changing later is expensive.
How do you report results?
Monthly, using Search Console, GA4 and Shopify data. We report organic sessions to commercial pages, orders and revenue from organic search, indexed and ranking pages, and the fixes shipped. Each report ends with the next set of priorities.
Do you only do SEO, or can you also run ads and email?
We do both. Our Google Ads, email and SEO teams work from the same data, as part of an ecommerce marketing plan when that suits your store.
